Audit celebrated anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland and
promoted social inclusion in dumpling making event

In the morning of 7 June 2025 (Saturday), a team of more than ten volunteers, made up of staff of the Audit Commission (Audit) and their family members, as well as staff of the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau (FSTB), took part in a service event organised by the Hong Kong PHAB Association, in which they joined the elderly and the physically disabled members of the i-Point District Support Centre (Southern) in making dumplings under the guidance of the Centre staff. The volunteers and the service recipients worked well together and had delightful exchanges. In addition to spreading care and promoting social inclusion, the occasion also allowed people from different walks of life to get together and celebrate the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Prof. Nelson Lam, Director of Audit, highlighted the meaning behind the theme of the event. Dumplings, he explained, are a traditional Chinese festive delicacy. Coming in a wide variety of ingredients, dumpling fillings embody the auspicious meaning of “abundance and happiness in life”. Making this symbolic dish is therefore a heart-warming way for the participants to express their best wishes for the Motherland and Hong Kong as an early celebration of the approaching anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland, and also to give their blessings to one another for bliss and contentment. In another perspective, dumplings, made up by wrappers and fillings, are a harmonious mix of ingredients, layers and flavours – a juxtaposition of a diverse and inclusive society, whose members accept, appreciate and respect each other, and where people of different backgrounds and skills enjoy equal opportunities and rights to engage in social affairs, make good use of their abilities, and join hands to create new possibilities to drive social development.

Prof. Lam took a moment to thank his staff at Audit for contributing their leisure time to voluntary service. He also welcomed collaboration with other bureaux/departments in support of voluntary service activities, through which members across the civil service could reach out together to the community, have an in-depth understanding of the public’s livelihood and needs, and, as a team, extend care to people from all corners of society. In its professional capacity, Audit would continue to keep a strong people-oriented mind-set, deliver its social mission and utilise its expertise in its role in public sector auditing, so as to help the Government and public sector organisations enhance their performance and accountability, and promote people’s happiness in life.
