Director of Audit spoke at the Commencement Ceremony of the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Business
On 11 June 2026 (Thursday), Prof. Nelson Lam, Director of Audit, was invited by the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) School of Business to speak at its 67th Commencement Ceremony. Prof. Lam took the opportunity to offer his congratulations and encouragement to the graduates.
“Just as the heavens are ever motioning with vigour, so should a gentleman continuously strive to perfect himself” (“天行健,君子以自強不息”) – in his speech, Prof. Lam quoted from a Chinese classic to motivate the graduates to persist in their pursuit of knowledge and rise to challenges, and at the same time, hold on to virtues, gentility and a positive, proactive mentality. Prof. Lam also shared his experience in teaching and public service, touched on the work of the Audit Commission and the “people-oriented” mindset of the auditors at the Commission in delivering public service, and, on that note, encouraged the graduates to leverage on the knowledge and skills acquired in their education in giving back to the society, as well as serving and benefiting the public.
The year 2026 stands as an important milestone for not just all the graduates at the ceremony, but also our nation. Prof. Lam reminded the audience that this year is of profound significance, for it marks the beginning of the National 15th Five-Year Plan and also the historic moment of Hong Kong formulating its First Five-Year Plan, under which Hong Kong will be well-positioned to seize even more opportunities brought about by the country’s strategies and development, and increased employment opportunities, a global arena and capacity for upward mobility will be available for different industries, thereby enabling our young generation to turn dreams into reality. Prof. Lam also encouraged the graduates and other members of the audience to take the initiative to align with the national development plan and actively respond to the public consultation on the Five-Year Plan by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, so as to chip in both ideas and effort to facilitate the development of our country and Hong Kong in our own roles. Believing in the power of our youth, Prof. Lam shared with the graduates another quote, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (“千里之行,始於足下”), with which he prompted them to take solid steps towards personal growth, deeply and mindfully cultivate themselves, better integrate into and serve the overall national development, and contribute to the future development of our country and Hong Kong.
Prof. Lam thanked the HKBU School of Business, his Alma Mater, for inviting him to speak
at the Commencement Ceremony, during which he shared his message and congratulations to
his young alumni.
Prof. Lam borrowed a line from a classic Chinese poem to illustrate the nature of the Audit
Commission’s work – “like a drizzle that slips into the night with the wind, and nourishes all
things in silence” (“隨風潛入夜,潤物細無聲”).
“A nation will prosper only when its young people thrive” – Prof. Lam urged the graduates
to constantly improve and equip themselves, and take responsibility to contribute to the
country and serve Hong Kong.
